If you regularly do sports, eat a healthy diet and generally feel great every day, you are probably as healthy as a fish and have no reason to worry. Nevertheless, even in such a favourable situation, it is worth checking your metabolic age, thanks to which the condition of your body will not have any secrets from you! At this point the fundamental question arises – how to calculate the metabolic age?

Metabolism is the name for the entirety of chemical reactions that take place in our body. They lead to very important transformations of energy and are also responsible for the ability to regenerate or sustain life processes. The role of metabolism is invaluable, so it is not surprising that metabolic age can greatly help in assessing health.

Metabolic age is valuable information about the condition of our body, telling us how much energy is needed to maintain proper functioning of the whole organism. We can calculate it on the basis of so called BMR, or basal metabolic rate. For this purpose it is best to consult your doctor or an experienced specialist, who will certainly help to obtain precise data. The rule is simple – the higher BMR, the more favorable metabolic age.

However, if you don’t feel a sudden need for thorough examination, you can calculate your metabolic age on your own – without even getting out of bed! Just use a popular formula: the Mifflin St. Jeor equation, which is presented as follows:

For men: BMR = 10 x weight (in kilograms) + 6.25 x height (in centimeters) – 5 x age (in years) + 5

For women: BMR = 10 x weight (in kilograms) + 6.25 x height (in centimetres) – 5 x age ( in years) – 161

The final step in this simple process is to verify your result using the metabolic age table. We should remember that although the metabolic rate is an individual issue and has its basis in genetics, it can be effectively influenced by frequent physical activity and following a proper diet on a daily basis. Going out for a bike, swimming pool, running or even a simple walk combined with regular water drinking and fiber-rich products can really work wonders!
