Good memory and concentration play an extremely important role in the life of each of us, allowing us to function properly in many areas of life. In order to take care of them, it is worth betting on regular physical activity in combination with a properly composed diet, supplementation and often overlooked brain training.

How does memory work?

The term memory describes the ability to store and reproduce information about past experiences. The brain of each of us is specialized in remembering a variety of content. This makes that there are several different types of memory. We can have to deal with:

auditory memory – is largely associated with remembering sounds and better understanding the meaning after saying a specific word or sentence out loud;

visual memory – this is mainly manifested in paying attention to details in the environment or visual details;

Tactile memory – this makes it possible to distinguish individual body sensations;

linguistic memory – it guarantees the ability to assign words to specific objects. This type of memory plays a key role in communication with the environment;

gustatory memory, which allows us to remember different tastes – salty, sweet, sour and bitter;

motor memory – allows for memorizing movement patterns and matching the dynamics of specific movement sequences

olfactory memory, which is largely linked to sensitivity to various olfactory stimuli.

Why do we have problems with memory?

We can distinguish a number of factors leading to problems with associating facts or remembering information. These include, among others, moving away from the so-called academic rhythm of learning. As a result, the brain becomes lazy. It is impossible not to mention here that every day we are bombarded with hundreds of different pieces of information, which makes the mind not always keep up with processing them.

Memory problems can also occur as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. As statistics show, it affects 20% of people over 80 years old. Sometimes this disorder can also occur in younger people. Other causes of memory disorders include endocrine diseases, such as Addison’s disease, Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism or pituitary insufficiency, depression, heavy metal poisoning, deficiencies of vitamins B1, B12, and folic acid, multiple sclerosis, and tumors of the central nervous system.

Physical activity and memory and concentration

How to effectively improve memory and concentration? Regular physical exercise can help. Activities such as running (whether outdoors or on a treadmill), dancing, jumping rope, aerobics and exercises on equipment such as bicycles, steppers or rowing ergometers have the best effect on brain function. Research results show that when we exercise, there is an increase in pressure and blood flow in the brain. The result is an increase in oxygen delivery and improved mental function.

Diet for memory and concentration

In order to take care of memory and concentration, special attention should also be paid to diet. This is due to the fact that the meals we eat affect the proper functioning of axons and glial cells responsible for nourishing active neurons. The menu for memory cannot lack, among others, vegetables and fruits rich in potassium, such as tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, oranges and peaches. This is because this element contributes to improving the work of the mind. Fish and vegetable fats containing omega unsaturated fatty acids also play an important role. To improve memory, the daily menu should also be enriched with eggs, which are a source of precursors of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitters responsible for, among other things, remembering words.
